BOX SCORE SYSTEM RULEBOOK

Welcome to the official rulebook for the Battle Rap Box Scoring System. This system is designed to provide a standardized, fair, and engaging method of scoring rap battles using a set of predefined emoji scoring icons. Each emoji represents a different point value, which can range from positive to negative, allowing OpenAI Battle Rap Ref and the BRC to accurately reflect the quality of each individual bar delivered by the performers.

  • Bar: A line of rap, typically consisting of one complete phrase. An example of two (2) bars would be:
    • “I was walking down the street and I saw a cat,
    • He had a gun so big it looked like a baseball bat.”
  • Box Score: The itemized breakdown of each individual bar scored.
  • Emoji Scoring Icon: A visual icon used to score each bar. Each emoji has a designated point value (see Emoji Scoring Icons below).
  • Time!: The official timer based on the contracted time limits. Time is paused for crowd reactions and repeated bars after a pause, such as when the Battle Rapper ‘run it back’.
  • Top Round(s) Score: The first performer in the match.
  • Bottom Round(s) Score: The Second performer in the match.

Ensure every bar in the battle is evaluated and scored to maintain consistent engagement and fairness throughout the performance.

  1. Assignment of Scores:
  • Each bar delivered by the rapper must be scored using at least one emoji scoring icon, but no more than two for a single bar. Such as a ‘Touchdown’ that was a ‘Name Flip’, may receive the Touchdown Emoji (+6) and a Name Flip Bonus Emoji (+3).
  • OpenAI Battle Rap Ref will award emojis based on the quality and impact of the bar according to the predefined point values of each emoji.
  1. Emoji Point Values:
  • Emojis have assigned point values, ranging from positive (for excellent performance) to negative (for poor performance).
  • The list of emoji scoring icons and their respective point values are provided below.
  1. Scoring Limits:
  • Every bar MUST be scored.
  • At least one emoji must be used to score EVERY bar.

Manage the duration of each performance to ensure that each rapper performs within their allotted time, maintaining a tight and engaging battle.

  1. Performance Time Limit:
  • Each rapper is given a specific amount of time to complete their performance based on the host League contract.
  • The official timer will start at the beginning of each rapper’s turn.
  1. Stopping the Timer:
  • The timer may be paused for crowd reactions, ensuring that the rapper is not penalized for audience engagement.
  • The timer will resume once the crowd has settled.
  1. Scoring Post-Time Limit:
  • No points will be added to a rapper’s score for any bars delivered after they have exceeded their time limit.
  • OpenAI Battle Rap Ref will cease scoring when the official timer indicates that time has expired.

Organize and present scores in a manner that is easy to understand and reflects the sequence of performances.

  1. Top Rounds Score:
  • The rapper who performs first in the battle will have all their scored emojis placed on the left side of the scorecard, under the section labeled ‘Top Rounds Score’.
  1. Bottom Rounds Score:
  • The second rapper to perform will have their scored emojis placed on the right side of the scorecard, under the section labeled ‘Bottom Rounds Score’.
  1. Stage Position Irrelevance:
  • The placement of scores on the scorecard does not depend on the physical position of the rappers on stage. It is solely based on the order of performance.

This rulebook sets the foundational guidelines for scoring in the Battle Rap Box Scoring System. The BRC is encouraged to familiarize themselves with the emoji scoring icons, their point values, and the scoring system’s overall structure to fairly and accurately score battles.
